Podium spent nine years making ServiceTitan’s customer records stickier: writing leads, payments, and conversation history straight into the system of record for roughly 7,500 home-services contractors. Then Podium’s AI agent business went from zero to $100 million in ARR in under 24 months, and Podium started selling an AI Operating System with a 14-day migration team built to replace the scheduling and dispatch software ServiceTitan runs.
On August 21, ServiceTitan cut the integration for roughly 1,000 shared customers, with 30 days’ notice, in the middle of peak HVAC season. Nine years of partnership and poof it was gone.
To be fair, ServiceTitan told everyone this was coming. Its API terms were updated in April and barred any AI system from independently deciding which endpoints to call. Its marketplace policy from June said competitive partners were welcome right up until they used ServiceTitan’s own support to gradually take over more of what ServiceTitan does.
Pretty much every app marketplace listing, co-marketing deal, or “connect your CRM” integration carries terms for what happens when your product starts looking like theirs. So my advice is to audit your lease. Which of your growth channels runs through someone else’s API? What does the AI-use clause say, and when did it last change? And does your own roadmap already look like the thing the landlord said not to build?
Worth Your Time
- OpenAI is sharpening its focus on enterprise advertisers (Digiday): OpenAI is hiring a marketing role built to position itself as a “premium advertising platform for the world’s marketers.” If your 2027 paid media plan doesn’t have a line item for testing that platform, it’s already out of date.
- AI-generated images test the same as stock photography (Nielsen Norman Group): Readers who didn’t know an image was AI-generated rated it the same as a stock photo, no credibility hit either way. The excuse for skipping AI imagery on quality grounds just got a lot harder to make.
- Everyone ends up with a sales team, even in the AI era (SaaStr): Replit’s Amjad Masad expected to skip sales culture entirely and says more than half his headcount will be in sales roles by year-end anyway. Self-serve buys a faster start, not an exit from the sales team you were trying to avoid.
- What is information gain in SEO? (Ahrefs): Whether Google runs a literal “information gain” score is unconfirmed and beside the point: the piece that adds something the top ten results don’t have is the one worth ranking, algorithm or not. A good gut check for the next brief before you assign it.
- Turn bugs into features (Wes Kao): The constraint you’re apologizing for on sales calls might be the differentiator you haven’t named yet. Worth a working session with support and sales before your next positioning refresh, not just product.
